I was today old when I learned (hi Dave!) that
the classic Klingon D7 starship was the result of
Star Trek designer Matt Jeffries knowing the owner of a model kit company who wanted something to market next to their Enterprise, so Jeffries designed it for him to make a film model. As arguments in favour of talking to the toy people go this is one of the better ones.
