The first issue of the BOOM! Studios Buffy The Vampire Slayer Ultimate style reboot series is out.
I’m certainly curious. The art is nice, the dialogue has some fun, and the setup has some intriguing differences.
Issue one alone is not really enough to judge beyond the dialogue and the art, as it’s about the equivalent of ten minutes of show. (Looks like the first four issues will be the first story arc so that scans.) But so far it’s not as different a reboot as oh, let’s say, the movie to the show. Or even less far, the script for the movie to the show.
We have Buffy, Willow, Xander, Giles, Sunnydale High, Joyce, bumpy vampires, patrolling in cemeteries...
And also Anya running a secret magic shop (and selling to Wolfram and Hart), Robin Wood as a school senior, and Drusilla, Spike also shown in the concept art released before issue 1.
No sign of Angel. Not even in concept art.
No Cordelia either, except in one of the (thirteen!) variant covers. On her way soon judging by a preview of the issue 3 cover and some interview mentions.
No sign of Dawn at all...
Buffy is already in a McJob, at Tunaverse rather than the Doublemeat Palace, for a bit more life being crappy.
As of this start, she’s been in town three weeks and already resents having to listen to Giles.
She meets Xander and Willow by saving them from a vamp rather than actually trying to make friends when she joins the school.
And is that lying-to-myself internal monologue, hinted at being Buffy, actually Xander?
Big props for original series back cover quote choice.
And a noteworthy change to the classic Chosen One spiel, it says they are the Slayer...
Also, issue 2 preview and interview.
