Hawkeye

Hawkeye 1.01 was a bit too coincidence-y to get all the pieces in place but now that’s done fun is being had.

It’s very, very the Matt Fraction / David Aja / Annie Wu comics run in content and tone, up to and including the title sequence, with Fraction getting an executive producer nod, while retrofitting to the married-with-kids Clint Barton rather than the single schlub version from the run.

This requires a bit of wiggling with Kate Bishop in a borrowed Ronin costume (because Clint being Ronin isn’t public knowledge so the more logical step of her copying that style because she’s his biggest fan doesn’t fit) and Lucky the Pizza Dog being introduced basically at random, but since this gets us Kate Bishop and Lucky the Pizza Dog I am okay with this.

The music by Christophe Beck and ;Michael Paraskevas encourages the bouncy fun train tone, hits little superspy notes, plays a variation on an Avengers fanfare for Clint’s big hero moments, and includes a great mystery-tension riff on Carol of the Bells.

For the LARPers sequence, I love that they recreated the “jump cut to costume” video clip I’ve seen so many actual LARPers do.

The Creature From The Dark Galaxy poster is for a fictional film, and looking at that led me to find that Moira Brandon is a highly obscure comics reference.

The opening showing the Battle of New York from street level introduced a hero, a conflict and an inspiring connection.

Also in episode 1, surprise Simon Callow!
