Willis joined the paper to take pictures, help with layout and get the online edition working, and has accepted the battle with the forces of evil as an unpleasant extracurricular requirement because, hey, better than the world ending when he’s not looking, and it lets him look almost mildly cool.

In Every Generation

Another January (why January?) another post-Chosen Buffyverse novel series with a new slayer from a new writer. In Every Generation by Kendare Blake has a premise straight outta fanfic, but who am I to talk there? Interview at Brazos Bookstore, mild spoilers. Note that it isn’t in continuity with the Dark Horse Comics seasons and the Slayer duo.

Madison has come to somewhat regret the journalism minor in her law degree, which mostly means interviewing the Fenmore sports teams and publicising charity events by societies but sometimes means having to help save the world from the forces of evil. Well, it’s good karma, hopefully.

Caitlin was always good at reading people, and sometimes saw things before they happened, leading her to accidentally solve a murder in high school and attract the attention of a monster who wanted to steal her eyes. Now she’s come to college and quickly figured out that there’s a Vampire Slayer on campus, who is definitely going to need help and soon.

Buffy characters are created through points for Attributes, Skills, Qualities and Drawbacks, and there are a couple of different options for how many you get, most commonly Heroes who start with more points in most places and White Hats who start with more narrative-influencing Drama Points and regain them more easily.

See last year for my experience as director and player.

Having created two seasons’ worth of plot hooks about a college newspaper with sketched-in characters, this makes an easy start.

Shelly is a freshman at Fenmore College, and wasn’t really planning on joining the student paper, but crossed paths with the staff while investigating a ritual murder as part of her main extracurricular activity of being a Vampire Slayer. They helped save the world so, yeah.

The Public Domain of Adventure!

This year stories from 1926 enter the public domain, and pulp historian Jess Nevins rounds up some pulp heroes and villains that are now available, including detectives, occult investigators related to the Cthulhu Mythos, alien-fighting cowboys, Napoleon’s chief aviator and... The Crimson Clown! This could make for a slightly alarming Adventure! party.

Winnie-the-Pooh and public domain too

Winnie-the-Pooh enters the public domain, but remember that the red shirt is a specific Disney addition.

So he can only serve in Command and Science divisions.

31 Day Character Creation Challenge 2022

Generate a starting character for an RPG every day for a month.

I completed the inaugural 31 Day Character Creation Challenge last January, making starting PCs for games I already knew very well, games I hardly knew at all, and games I literally found on the day. An entirely different run of 31 games could work but might get pretty obscure.

So this year, a new plan of sorts.

A party each for half a dozen games.
