What If... 1.08
“Natasha Romanoff and Clint Barton seek to destroy killer-robot Ultron after a cataclysmic event.”
The shortest episode yet by three minutes.
That non-sequitur ending last week that had the Watcher confused as well leads to this, with a Vision in Ultron armour with all the Infinity Stones.
The Avengers failing to get the Vision leads to Ultron taking that body, and the Mind Stone, and destroying the Avengers (yes, Tony dies) and most of humanity, apart from Clint and Natasha.
And then Thanos shows up and Ultron cuts him in half. Which I’m sure Thanos appreciated the irony of.
So Infinity-powered Ultron and his army of more-classic-grin Ultron drones annihilate Asgard and carry on, with only Captain Marvel slowing them down.
And then...
Ultron hears the Watcher narrating and comes to find him.
So we only really get half an episode as billed, and then a fight across several universes, which is a big visual highlight of the show.
So it’s time for the intervention that the Watcher promised he wouldn’t be doing when the series started. Of which more next week for the season finale, because unlike the ongoing comics this isn’t all actually standalone stories.
