RPGaDAY 2026 21. Charity

#RPGaDAY 2026

21. Charity

21. Share an RPG charity past or present that moved you.

Tim Bradstreet had his signed early Vampire: The Masquerade art portfolios for sale at the 2011 Grand Masquerade convention in the US and I went to get one to put into the Conpulsion auction here, I mentioned this and he gave me it for free. (I bought another for myself, naturally!) And I was glad to let him know it was the first lot to go for more than £100 that year.

There was also the time a family illness led to Conpulsion switching charity for the auction, for which I am forever grateful.

And as GM Ian mentions, the long-running Marvel SAGA game where I played Charity Chance, Agent Of SABER!

RPGaDAY 2026 15. Endurance

#RPGaDAY 2026

15. Endurance

15. How would you organise an endurance session of your favourite game?

I’ve helped organise and run 24 hour charity RPG events, with optional sponsorship for how many hours a player can manage as well as ways to buy powers and equipment and plot twists with donations. I wasn’t one of the GMs who tried to run one game the whole time, however.

I’ve also been in weekend and longer gaming retreats, including one where a three-part game ran every evening, but not one where the group tried to get through a whole campaign in the time.

Marathon sessions need ways for PCs to come and go along with their players. They often go with the classic dungeon crawl tournament style, seeing how long a given PC can survive.

Not something I’m great at - I could probably do it with a horror game though. An always rising threat and lots of PCs to throw at it. Alien looks like a good choice from the games in my to-do-something-with stack.

I could absolutely run a weekend mini-campaign of many games, six sessions or so. If there’s a suitably sized campaign you can do in that time, go for it.

Something like a mini-arc for Buffy like running through the Initiative specific parts of season four, or the Pylea miniseries at the end of Angel season two.

Maybe a Vampire game tracking a small group through history, or to pick an example we’ve had a sourcebook and TV show for since I ran a band game going on tour.

Or a Star Wars game doing a “trilogy” with a rising threat to galactic freedom, starting with a plucky band and ending with massive space battles and also high personal stakes.

Or an MCU-sized superhero adventure.

Tabletop Scotland 2026 RPG listings

RPG listings for Tabletop Scotland 2026 are now, booking opening on the 27th. Starting here on Friday afternoon.

Some fire the imagination with the games offered, titles and blurbs. (Gar Hanrahan is GMing Merryshire! I count at least three 1980s White Dwarf adventures for different systems from different GMs! There’s an ALIEN game with twenty spaces?! Somebody is running TOON!)

Others...

Am I running anything? No. But at least I can confirm that.

Darkness Emergent LA itself

With the natural focus on the V? announcement and related panels, a look at the Darkness Emergent LARP and related events from the POV of an immersive horror event fan which makes for interesting reading for those looking at running something big.

I was not expecting a giant puppet monster. Nice!

Nationals 2027

Nationals 2027 will be hosted by HUSSARS in Stirling.

Which is a surprise as they’ve often done well and passed on hosting due to lack of a good venue. Sounds like they have some plans in place though!

Dates TBC

Theme is Noir.

Can I do Noir in Urban Fantasy? Sure.

Can I do Noir in Buffy? Yes but don’t wanna.

Conpulsion 2026 quiz answers

Answers. Can you beat the winning team, that got 47 out of 66, 8 on audio so 39 out of 54?

Conpulsion 2026 quiz

Conpulsion quiz went alright, I think. Of the six teams actually trying, the lowest still got 31 of 66. (The team anti-trying got 1, to their chagrin.)

Questions below, apart from the audio round. (So 54 points available!) Answers soonish.

Glasgow Regionals

Obviously someone at Glasgow had fun at Nationals 2024, as they’re organising a mini version in October. The prize for the winning team is a chunk of the charity money going to their chosen charity, which is a pretty cool variation.

Hugo Awards 2025

Since I wasn’t in the building and didn’t vote this is a bit more academic than last year.

Nice to see Lower Decks getting Dramatic Presentation (short) for the finale and Graphic Story for the spinoff gamebook comic Warp Your Own Way.

Surprising that’s the first time Star Trek got anything since the end of TNG. Deep Space Nine: Far Beyond The Stars didn’t even get nominated? And Insurrection did?!

(To be fair Dramatic Presentation hadn’t been split into Long and Short in 1999, so there was one TV episode, the finale of Babylon 5, and four films. But still, one was Insurrection.)

The book about fash appropriating genre works is a good and worthy winner for related work, but a lot less fun than The Spectacular Failure Of The Star Wars Hotel as discussed here, and I guess the two reports on Hugo Award own goals split the vote.

Tabletop Scotland update

Sounds like Tabletop Scotland wants more GMs? Makes sense having filled every pre-book space in days.
