Buffy comics news

Buffy comics news!

Arriving July (22nd according to writer Kelly Thompson, not 27th) and this update includes a hint of where it is on the timeline and variant covers, not just the one shown at launch (that I always thought looks more like Anya Taylor-Joy) so progress of a sort, as well as a cast lineup by artist Stephen Byrne.

Season five adjacent I guess?

And of course Byrne previously made a pretty impressive bit of fanart in another style: A Buffy animated title sequence.

The New Sunnydale screenplay

According to Slayerfest 98 “the script leak floating around is an early draft - not the shooting script” so I’ll work from there.

I’d say it largely works.

And not just because Nova wants to go to Cambridge.

(Early naming, later Rowan.)

One of the possible new Scoobies gets to spotlight the horror of the whole thing well.

“What are you?”
“You know.”

It does feel very much like part one of an intro two-parter. Basically a whole story but ending on an appeal to come back.

And it’s very much a sequel, which is cool for audiences like me but I can see concerns about getting new people. I’m sure they could have gotten the balance in time.

20 Buffy plots from Ego Death At A Bachelorette Party

Happy birthday to Hayley Williams!

Her new album Ego Death At A Bachelorette Party (content note: swears) contains several tracks that I would fit into a Buffy The Vampire Slayer soundtrack, and the traditional title idea jam:

Character Creation Challenge 2025 1: Buffy The Vampire Slayer

Character Creation Challenge 2025

1: Buffy The Vampire Slayer

A band is one of the obvious side jobs for a bunch of kids in a van solving mysteries, hence it being one of my immediate Buffy The Vampire Slayer series ideas. (See at least one actual post-Buffy TV series.)

And has happened a few times, currently in a PBP, as well as a long time using it at the Nationals.

Almost There

Concept
College rock band who have to fight monsters. Expect some conflict about wishing they could just be a band and duty to save the world, episodes about haunted recordings and evil record companies and that kind of thing. On a metaphorical level it’s about how hard it can be to do what you want, and balancing it with what you need to do.

10 Buffy hooks from the Paramore Eras setlist

Happy birthday Hayley Williams!

Paramore have been supporting Taylor Swift’s Eras tour, so ten adventures from their Edinburgh Sunday setlist, using some titles again but trying not to do the same idea.

Hard Times
The Slayer finds herself yoinked back to the worst day of her life. Can she make it better? And if she changes it, what will that do?

Heart Of Glass
Magically immortal and not a great person. But not so bad he can just have his heart torn out Adam style...?

Burning Down The House
A supposedly haunted house at the edge of town. A big party breaking in. A demonstration that it ain’t just supposedly. Can the gang get everybody out, including themselves?

Still Into You
A Scooby’s ex shows up... the ghost of a tragically died kind of ex.

Forgiveness
A friend of the Slayer or a Scooby’s relative who freaked about the whole magic-is-real thing now wants to apologise... and maybe get something magical working for them.

Brick By Boring Brick
Killing a Slayer is good in the short term but another will pop up somewhere, even if not locally. Putting a Slayer in a secret prison for a long life...

The Only Exception
The Slayer falls in love, for realsies this time. Can she tell this one person?

Misery Business
Demons bottling negative emotions have come to this more-than-averagely-suffering town to get the ingredients they need. Of course if they can make hero types feel crappy as well that’s premium grade sorrow. Now how to do that...?

Ain’t It Fun
Monster hunters from out of town who think this is a good time. And for them it is, and for some of the gang this free and easy life might appeal.

This Is Why
After a hard fight, maybe a painful loss, a reminder of why this has to be done, and someone actually appreciating it.

Ten Buffy hooks from This Is Why by Paramore

Happy birthday Hayley Williams!

This Is Why
This is why I don’t leave the house
It’s bad out there every time the slayer steps outside. But is it just happening because she steps outside?

The News
War
Turning on the news and... did they just report that vampire attack?

Running Out Of Time
There was traffic spilled my coffee crashed my car - otherwise, woulda been here on time
Throw on the duties of a monster hunter on top of an exam crunch and one of the gang could do with an extra couple of hours in the day... and then gets them.

C’est Comme Ça
Lucky for me I run on spite and sweet revenge
One of the gang gets bashed into the hospital and figures they should take life one day at a time. is this actually safer?

Big Man, Little Dignity
Know you could get away with anything so that’s exactly what you do
Someone who’s sold his soul for personal power. Not a monster per se, but he sure needs to be stopped.

You First
Turns out I’m livin’ in a horror film where I’m both the killer and the final girl
Someone out to steal the power of the slayer, from his perspective to do better things with it.

Figure 8
All for your sake, became the very thing that I hate
It’s a terrible relationship, but how do you tell a friend that?

Liar
Love is not an easy thing to admit
It’s a great relationship, but how do you tell a friend that?

Crave
Crave to do it again, all again
One of the gang has the best day ever... and relives it. And the rest of the gang notice, and have to figure out a way to stop without causing heartbreak or the destruction of space and time.

Thick Skull
Same lesson again? Come on, give it to me, give it to me
And then the spell snaps back, and now the slayer has the worst day ever, and as many chances to fix it...

Adventure Calendar 2023 17: Buffy The Vampire Slayer

Adventure Calendar 2023
17: Buffy The Vampire Slayer

And now the one I’ve done. And written up ideas for. More than once. As well as statting up Santa Claus.

Having come up with quite a few ideas about the mythologies around Christmas, to go a different way:

Secret Santa Identity

The slayer or other character living at home and keeping their monster-fighting activities secret discovers that some extended family are coming to visit for the holidays, which will put a crimp on their going out and slaying. You can go full-on door-slamming farce with the attempts to hide the superheroics. Worse still, none of them turn out to be monsters so you can’t just kill them like Inca Mummy Girl.

The Watch House at twenty

The first session of my longest ever RPG series The Watch House was this evening in 2003.

Based on the then recently ended Buffy The Vampire Slayer which I cam to a new society looking to run the game of with one player guaranteed, and swiping its premise from a game called The Night Watch by Steve Dee, it was about trainee Watchers and other young people they had to keep an eye on studying at Cambridge - as opposed to Steve’s use of Oxford, so I got a few M. R. James jokes instead of Tolkien jokes.

I wasn’t expecting it to go much past a semester, as my games usually did, so I was a bit surprised when we got to season seven after five and a half years. I’d set the game starting in 1998 because the Watcher power structure got hit by the plot in Buffy season seven so I didn’t want to run it in the aftermath and I joked that we’d have to deal with that when we got there... and then we did. Of course the main effect of the period setting was knowing which songs we could reference when the characters were listening to music.

It ran so long because we had an enthusiastic group of players, the Buffy system didn’t get in the way, the setting let us do all kinds of weird ideas, and the series’ sense of humour meant that we could often have the kind of geeky referencing and undercutting of villains common to RPGs become in-character dialogue.

The college setting and children of Watchers expected to take up the family obligation and inheritors of other obligations too meant it developed an actual theme too, the freedom of student life versus the responsibilities and expectations of home.

And since I was running at uni and we were generally in our twenties when we started it also got a bit autobiographical at times for a lot of us. I apologise again to everybody who sustained my personal in-my-twenties as a result.

There are things in-game I’d do differently too – if I’d know he’d be playing the same character five and a half years later I would have let David make his own, Jamie’s character was revealed as a werewolf early because another player couldn’t let it lie out of character, and we really could have dialled down the attempt to recreate Buffy season two when Derek’s character became a vampire. But all things considered, not a lot.

The show’s season structure definitely helped for that long run, letting different characters take up more or less of the spotlight as they faced a variety of Big Bads. The session more-or-less as episode format gave us some focus as well. It sometimes led to long sessions that ended in the pub after we got shooed out of the student union, and sometimes to walking home and chatting through the night as we did. And to ‘plotting and scheming’ meetups between sessions, which for a while turned into taking the piss out of that week’s episode of Torchwood while sharing a bottle of wine.

And it let us get experimental and weird with the format at times too. We spent weeks planning the “behind the scenes” episode where most of the characters were revealed to be actors playing them on TV, with John and David playing the unaffected characters given only a small clue this might be an odd session. This is the kind of thing you can only do if you know the players will have fun with it, and Cat prepared a get-out in case it didn’t work.

And I got surprised as well - I dropped one of my possible plots because Stu had his character’s envy fuel a magic spell that meant we could no longer take the possible villain seriously. Wanting the crush to see the handsome confident guy making moves on her as he did while grumbling about how handsome and confident he was led to her instead seeing him as a superhero called “Captain Rugged - the man with the face!”

Which also led to one of several examples of using actors as visual references for player and non-player characters for the “show” that was either prescient or skill in typecasting - Captain Rugged! was “cast” with Henry Cavill after his first shot at playing Superman but years before he got the role.

(And don’t get me started on how many weird one-shot episodes Supernatural did after us. Okay, sure, we in turn swiped them from comics and other TV shows and realistically that’s where they stole them from, but still...)

It led to me making my first video edit for a game, a laborious but thrifty Christmas present for the group, as well as customising action figures which was laborious but also not thrifty, and miniatures for the final session in the spring of 2009.

Milli by Storn Cook

I also typed up Actual Play reports, back when you had to type that kind of thing, which led to us having fans!

Something else I’d do differently if I’d known we’d go so long, I would have recorded the sessions... though typing does mean you don’t get to hear how often I’d say “uh...”

Of course its biggest legacy is that it’s how Lucy and Doug met, so it’s the only game I’ve run that helped lead to a marriage and children.

A mini RPGaDay2023 Buffy season

A Buffy The Vampire Slayer season and a half based on the RPGaDay2023 one (or few) word prompts.

Slayer, Scoobies, Watcher, etc.

Here in daily add a line format!

RPGaDay2023 27) Game you'd like a new EDITION of...

#RPGaDay2023

27) Game you'd like a new EDITION of...

This prompt has an ellipsis...

2014 answer: A new Adventure! that gets sourcebooks and a new Star Trek game with more of a show than simulation feel. Hey, I got that!

(No official new Marvel SAGA, but two out of three ain’t bad!)

Now I’d like a different new Star Wars RPG, one that reflects the sequel trilogy and the Disney+ shows with more than one starter set and a couple of illustrations across several books.

A new edition of Buffy would also be nice because it would mean the recent attempt at a new Buffyverse show happened. Ah well.

One word prompt

27) EDITION

Newspapers and other news sources as (a) plot hooks and (b) campaign setups.

There are a few games focusing on journalism - most notably Weekly World News style bullshit journalism, which in the games is of course true.

I’ve previously RPGaDay-ed two seasons of plots for a college paper based Buffy game. Naturally they don’t get to break a lot of stories so it’s more of a reason to adventure.

It’s one of the standard occupations with a hook for Call Of Cthulhu, and it was an option in Gangbusters too so it goes back a long way, although it seems to be a distant third behind gangs and people actively busting them.

The Media was always a character option in Cyberpunk, thanks mostly to Max Headroom, but not as well supported with adventures as the basic mercenary types. They might both follow an investigation, but only one gets to take up the last hour of a session with gunfights.

The Watch House premiere at 19

Today marks the 19th anniversary of my first Actual Play report for our Buffy game The Watch House. I wish I could have arranged to record and podcast it so I could hear friends again, but the polished script format was probably for the best so you don’t have to listen to 19-year-old “um”s and “er”s.

Reminder for next year to do something on October 19th, the actual game anniversary.

To celebrate, I might ask somebody who’s good at painting miniatures to tackle my Buffy Unmatched figures as I finally managed to import a copy.

The Watch House at 19

Retroactive post for the anniversary of the first session of The Watch House, having looked and found the date in the Actual Play for the series.

The game made for some labour-intensive Christmases!

Buffy The Vampire Slayer at 25 plot hooks

Buffy The Vampire Slayer is very easy to come up with plot hooks for, and has been a recurring feature in the “plot hooks based on this list of random-ish titles” idea for RPG plots that started with song titles.

So to be recursive, there are twenty-four songs in the US and UK releases of the Radio Sunnydale soundtrack album. Close enough, though it includes two versions of the Buffy theme, making it twenty-two. Which is the number of a full season, but I want three more.

So to boost up, Four Star Mary provided songs for Oz’s band Dingoes Ate My Baby, with their three song set from Dead Man’s Party.

The Dandy Warhols - Bohemian Like You
Nikka Costa - Everybody Got Their Something
Christophe Beck - Dead Guys With Bombs
Devics - Key
Lunatic Calm - Sound Of the Revolution
Dashboard Prophets - Ballad For Dead Friends
Angie Hart - Blue
Aimee Mann - Pavlov’s Bell
Alison Krauss - That Kind Of Love
Aberdeen - Sink Or Float
Patty Medina - Still Life
Laika - Black Cat Bone
Man of the Year - Just as Nice
Melanie Doane - I Can’t Take My Eyes Off You
Fonda - The Sun Keeps Shining On Me
Halo Friendlies - Run Away
Emiliana Torrini - Summerbreeze
Cibo Matto - Sugar Water
Robert Duncan - The Final Fight

Joey Ramone - Stop Thinking About It
Blur - There’s No Other Way
Sarah McLachlan - Prayer Of Saint Francis

Four Star Mary - Never Mind
Four Star Mary - Pain
Four Star Mary - Sway

Putting the US and Four Star Mary additions after three UK tracks with one bump to put The Final Fight at the end.

Let’s assume a classic Slayer and Scoobies setup...

Buffy The Vampire Slayer at 25 in RPGs

Buffy The Vampire Slayer is a natural fit for RPGs.

Demo at the BBC Cult TV page, which shows most of the system including most of the Drama Points

Urban fantasy plainclothes supers in a world where a whole lot of weird things can happen.

There have been modern-ish monster and monster hunting games before and since and the Buffyverse is a nice big kitchen sink. I often come up with absurd episode hooks on the way to sessions and the setting can take them.

Musical! Silent movie! Turn a hero into a puppet - twice!

And the genre savvy snark you find at gaming tables is part of the show and a natural to bring in character!

See my Buffy Season series like this one and this one and my enormous number of random-title-list plot hook threads.

Indeed, I started trying to cobble together a Buffy game before the licence was announced.

And we were lucky enough to get a good official system for it. Cinematic Unisystem is pretty simple, and the addition of Drama Points makes the balancing of Heroes and White Hats kind of viable and fun.

I quibble with things like granular Life Points and the single D10 (the Vortex system for Doctor Who learned a lot from CU and has 2D6) and I’ve previously house ruled Sorcery as it replicates Willow’s rise from first spell to extinction-level event in four seasons in a game-breaky way, but I could and do run it RAW.

Some of my Buffy love is naturally bolstered by The Watch House, the biggest game I’ve ever run and my favourite, but that started with my existing enthusiasm to run a Buffy game and most of the players’ keenness to run with it.

I made friends through the series, as well as through Buffy in general and in gaming.

And thanks to Steve D for letting me steal his Watchers at university series hook!

I’ve run quite a few Buffy games since, and would cheerfully do so again.

I made the Urban Fantasy category at the Nationals happen so I could run it there.

I even got to play it for a few weeks once! As well in play-by-posts going back to their launch on RPG.net, and I’m running one there now.

Buffy The Vampire Slayer at 25

Buffy The Vampire Slayer, the series, premiered in the USA twenty-five years ago tonight.

It started for me with the BBC Two premiere, December 30th 1998, having been alerted that this show was better than expected by genre magazines. So it’s been with me half my life.

I talk about it quite a lot. Like so on RPGnet.

The TV logo caught up with the merchandising after season two.

It surprised a lot of people by being funny, dramatic, exciting, surprising and moving - often in the same scene.

I love this show.

Ian from SlayerFest 98 has a retrospective on the retrospective at GQ, talking about what it means to him and how it belongs to the world and not just its creator.

Going to tune into the Buffering The Vampire Slayer watch party tomorrow. Sadly not actually at Torrance High!

“So that’s everything, huh? No weapons, no friends... No hope. Take all that away, and what’s left?”
“Me.”

I rewatch the series on the regular and specific episodes when they line up with dates or events - I have three options for Halloween but there are also birthdays, Valentine’s Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas, and any time I get a cold. And when I need a laugh, or a good cry, or comfort, or strength.

Rewatches at the A. V. Club, Tor dot com, and Morgue for the high school years.

Some other elements haven’t aged well (the Roma magic thing for one) but I think in the main it holds up.

Having been running on E4 and 4Music nightly for about two years, the whole show and Angel are all on Disney+ now.

And stuff keeps coming out. There was a spinoff novel starting a series in January and another on the way, and the alternate-universe comics from Boom! Studios has an anniversary special and launched a spinoff post-apocalypse miniseries yesterday.

And in the gaming realm there are official miniatures for Buffy, Angel, Willow and Spike with the Unmatched minis duelling game, Jasco have a board game and expansion on shelves now, and the published Buffy and Angel RPG books are still available in PDFs (demo) - and a Bundle Of Holding is currently running for the anniversary.

Not much word on the planned reboot in a while. But one never knows.

A comics page I did, oh, a while ago. 15 years is a while. right?

This story saved my world a lot.

And of course I got very into Buffy RPGs...

Character Creation Challenge 6a: Buffy The Vampire Slayer

6a: Buffy The Vampire Slayer (revised edition)

Adding a second Hero for my 500th Buffy post on this blog here...

Having created a very classic Hero, one powered White Hat and three regular types, I figured I should show a bit more of the variety of the system. There are rules for revenant-style thinking zombies in Monster Smackdown, but for walking through walls I had to DIY something. (Part of a tradition for ghost PCs going back to my first Buffy PBP as Director.)

And I got a “Ha!” for Madison’s quote, which was nice.

Jerome Phineas “Jer” Endicott
Type: Hero, ghost

Description: Timelessly stylish, fortunately.
Example quote: “I died protecting the college once already, so it’s not as if I have anything pressing.”

Zain Hussain

Fenmore College has a long history of fairly odd occurrences, and nobody knows this better than Jerome Endicott, because he died fighting an ancient demon in 1912. His spirit remained, however, connected to the archives of the student magazine that preceded the Sentinel. And now a long-dead evil threatens to return, and he has awakened as well, able to touch and affect the world again.

Which is probably not a harbinger of an apocalyptic threat.

Right?

Character Creation Challenge 5a: Buffy The Vampire Slayer

5a: Buffy The Vampire Slayer (revised edition)

Willis Langford
Type: White Hat, photographer and tech support

Description: ‘Dude, really?’ expression
Example quote: “I’m not “book smart”, and I’m not “street smart”, but I’m... I, uh - which was the one with books? I have that.”

Fred Hechinger

Willis joined the paper to take pictures, help with layout and get the online edition working, and has accepted the battle with the forces of evil as an unpleasant extracurricular requirement because, hey, better than the world ending when he’s not looking, and it lets him look almost mildly cool.

Character Creation Challenge 4a: Buffy The Vampire Slayer

4a: Buffy The Vampire Slayer (revised edition)

Madison Hale
Type: White Hat, one-woman society page

Description: Just so.
Example quote: “Okay, they don’t have reflections, but they have eternity to get their skin and hair care routine together so that’s really not an excuse.”

Courtney Eaton

The group’s social ninja, with connections to college elites which may include secret societies.

Madison has come to somewhat regret the journalism minor in her law degree, which mostly means interviewing the Fenmore sports teams and publicising charity events by societies but sometimes means having to help save the world from the forces of evil. Well, it’s good karma, hopefully.
