Thunderbolts*

Thunderbolts*

That was fun.

Which is impressive considering what it’s about.

Pretty Yelena centric, but it’s probably sensible to focus on one messed-up character reaching out.

Walker maybe needed more of an intro for cinema audiences.

Corridor fight!

As well as the trailer, IMAX promo and post-credits scene here for Fantastic Four, they’re really hyping that one.

#RPGaDay2024 27 - Marvellous miniature

27 - Marvellous miniature

Many miniatures are marvellous. Especially these days with the kind of thing you can do with computer sculpts and 3D printers.

And I get some every now and then as things to have. But I don’t use them in RPGs, because I feel like if I started seeking exact matches for the PCs and properly artistic maps and scenery I’d have trouble stopping.

And that would get in the way of improvising location details for stunts and the like.

Of course I want this table, but I would also need the rom it goes in.

So even before a Holodeck becomes available, a holotable would be great for tabletop gaming.

27a - Miniature

And the somewhat obvious alternative spin for the prompt - PCs being miniaturised or otherwise small in a giant-sized world. A time when one could use miniatures to represent the PCs while using your regular surroundings as the scenery. And there are full games for Borrowers sized PCs, tiny human-shaped supernatural beings, intelligent mice and so on.

27b - Shapeshifting

It’s one of the classic powers, but I don’t think I’ve ever played a full-on shapeshifter outside of Werewolf: The Apocalypse where the rules for their five forms a rebuilt in and anything else requires special abilities. I have played a superhero who could control different specialised artificial bodies, but he just had a few as well so I only needed a small number of stat blocks.

Also the coolest scene in Dungeons & Dragons: Honour Among Thieves. Doric obviously specialised heavily.

What If...? Season 2...? Trailer...?

What If...? season two came out daily over Christmas to New Year? And included a Christmas special with Darcy and Happy that probably could have happened in the regular universe? Trailer and theories at Empire.

No zombies in the trailer at least.

The Marvels

The Marvels is huge fun.

It has plenty of Carol Danvers Beats Up Everyone, one of my favourite things in Marvel, and she does other things as well, Kamala and the Khans get a lot to do, Monica gets to carry some of the heart of the story too.

I also loved the training montage including the jump-rope game.

For those who haven’t seen Ms. Marvel and WandaVision, there’s a heads-up for Kamala and basically a “just go with it” for explaining her and Monica’s powers.

And at one point I laughed so hard I started coughing.

Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. tenth anniversary

Marvel’s Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. began here ten years ago, with an odd start due to its connection to the Marvel Cinematic Universe meaning S.H.I.E.L.D. was about to stop being the consistent superspy agency, and that would be dramatised late in season one after some slow buildup in among its cases of the week. After that it cut loose a bit more, so it ended in a parallel universe. Along the way it had a space adventure season, a time travel season, a three-mini-seasons season with robot doubles and a HYDRA win and Ghost Rider, and a lot of other fun along the way.

RPGaDay2023 8) Favourite CHARACTER

#RPGaDay2023

8) Favourite CHARACTER

2014 answer: Charity Chance, Agent of S.A.B.E.R. which I created as a precursor to S.H.I.E.L.D., has since led to great amusement when a Marvel agency called S.A.B.E.R. actually happened.

And obviously Milli fandom as a GM goes on.

Since 2014, I’ve had a lot of fun playing Cara the absolutely not Vampire Slayer of a Mage, as well as recent and current could-almost-play NPCs like Ligeia and Colette.

One word prompt

8) CHARACTER

Do you have a “recurring cast” of NPCs in connected games?

Secret Invasion 1.05

Marvel’s Secret Invasion
1.05: Harvest

Okay, the episode titles will probably not make a sentence.

Olivia Colman continues to be delightful as Evil Olivia Colman. Surprise reference!

Wednesday, 12 July 2023

Secret Invasion 1.04

Marvel’s Secret Invasion
1.04: Beloved

I continue to wonder if the episode titles are going to form a sentence.

Secret Invasion 1.03

Marvel’s Secret Invasion
1.03: Betrayed

Talos continues to be great grumpy fun. Otherwise it’s mostly waiting for the next Skrull reveal or other twist.

Secret Invasion 1.02

Marvel’s Secret Invasion
1.02: Promises

Nick Fury falls out with people.

Juliet Stevenson in a two minute cameo?

We have a Skrull Prime Minister? Good for us.

Secret Invasion 1.01

Marvel’s Secret Invasion
1.01: Resurrection

Having played the Skrulls against type in Captain Marvel, Secret Invasion has to bring in a new (and still sympathetic... in intent) faction to have shapeshifting villains threatening to take over the world.

It pulls two of the most obvious tricks in the setup in episode one, which gets them out of the way nicely.

Russia. Because it has so many derelict nuclear power stations, but still, Russia.

The credits are a nice use of machine learning animation, but still machine learning animation.

Olivia Colman being Olivia Colman-y while still sinister.

Iron Man

Iron Man came out on this day in 2008. The Marvel Cinematic Universe is fifteen years old. That’s almost a third of my life, although being the most recent third it still feels like a pretty new phenomenon.

I knew the plan was to make more, with Marvel holding the rights to a pretty classic Avengers lineup and The Incredible Hulk already on the way, but it still seemed risky. Iron Man itself was a low-stakes gamble despite costing 200 million dollars. Another Hulk movie? Thor? Captain America? This chain of “could this really work?” thinking pretty much kept going until Guardians Of The Galaxy. (Not helped, it must be said, by Iron Man 2 being pretty clunky.)

The biggest surprise I remember on the night was the end, not counting the post-credits scene. Having set up the traditional secret identity... Tony just dropped it.

One press group reaction shot and roll credits.

Just like that, it was already a very different superhero story. (Fantastic Four: Rise Of The Silver Surfer had the team in the public eye a year earlier, following their public identities in the comics, but for Stark it was a change.) Whatever came next could be pretty wild.

And it has been.

Character Creation Challenge 2023 8: The Supersoldier

Character Creation Challenge 2023

31 Buffy The Vampire Slayer characters

8: The Supersoldier

Riley was always going to split the fandom, but from an RPG perspective a new fighter in the group who brings some plot hooks and doesn’t step on any other PCs’ shticks is much more welcome.

Well-supported, well-trained and well-equipped monster hunters show up now and then, to contrast with the thrown-into-this Scoobies without taking over the show. So take one, put them on the outs with the big group, have some conflict on methods and see how that goes...

Dan Clayburn
Type: Hero

Description: Clearly he works out.
Example quote: “Stand down. I’m asking once to be nice.”

Enver Gjokaj

A decorated soldier before his move to special ops, “Clay” has seen a bit too much. And now he’s on secondment to the ROTC program in a little college town where he’s also supposed to be keeping an eye on monsters. And, apparently, a Vampire Slayer.

Star Wars: Andor 1.06: The Eye

Star Wars: Andor
1.06: The Eye

Part three of the second three-parter. More my kind of thing than 1-3, but more on the Rogue One level than the kind of Star Wars I’d make.

D23 Marvel and LucasFilm

D23, the big Disney showcase, started yesterday with Disney and Pixar including Inside Out 2 being announced and trailers for The Little Mermaid, Hocus Pocus 2 and Disenchanted, and today with Marvel and Lucasfilm (and Avatar) - and I say Lucasfilm rather than Star Wars because as well as the Willow series trailer they got the Indiana Jones trailer. Not yet online, but some of the Marvel and Star Wars reveals are.

Tales Of The Jedi trailer. October 24th. More animated Clone Wars, not the ancient stories the previous use of the title suggests.

Loki season two trailer - with Ke Huy Quan in the cast, leading to a photo with Harrison Ford getting lots of hopes up about Short Round reappearing.

The Marvels (no trailer for us yet) is due July 2023.

Secret Invasion trailer. Nick Fury! Skrulls! Spies! Olivia Colman!

Seeing the Thunderbolts group art in a skewed photo on a tablet I briefly thought that was Melinda May on the left. Which considering it also has USAgent seems not impossible. Ah well.

The Werewolf By Night Halloween special probably won’t actually be in black and white, but still looks fun like a reverse of The Beast Must Die.

Ms. Marvel 1.06: No Normal

Ms. Marvel 1.06
No Normal

A fun finale with a pretty good job of combining the disparate threads.

Back to some more playful visuals.

Mid-credits scene!

Ghost Rider at 50

Ghost Rider, the flaming skeletal motorbike stuntman version, first appeared in comics in May 1972 (dated August) and this escapee from a metalhead logo design has had a wild ride since.

Not least being played by Nicolas Cage.

(Who had to get his Ghost Rider tattoo covered to play him.)

(Later Ghost Rider Robbie Reyes got closer to the MCU with an arc in Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. season four.)

Confusingly a Rollins Band cover of a Suicide song about him appears on the soundtrack to The Crow, while the song in question never appears in either Cage film.

I was the right age for the 1990 version starring Danny Ketch instead of Johnny Blaze. This made Ghost Rider a legacy character, and brought Blaze in to introduce a rather involved backstory assorted empowering spirits and demons.

Ghost Rider has since become a retcon legacy character with Riders for previous eras being introduced as well.

But not this one by Mike Bear.

Avengers at ten

Marvel’s The Avengers came out here ten years ago.

Tom Breihan’s Age Of Heroes retrospective. Sophie Butcher at Empire.

Hill interrupts his escape, Steve joins the man ruining his BS speech, Thor shows his motivations are warped, Fury throws his threats back at him, Natasha tricks the god of lies, Coulson dismisses his chances while dying, Tony casually explains his plan is doomed over a drink, Clint blows him up mid gloat about catching his arrow, Selvig builds a failsafe despite mind control and Bruce...

... well, you know.

It’s one of the film’s many delights on its own merits, as well as a key part of the all-conquering Marvel Cinematic Universe. (This week is also the anniversary of Age Of Ultron, Infinity War and Endgame.)

I remember when we weren’t sure this would work.

By then Marvel and Jon Favreau had made Iron Man a surprise hit and a lot of fun, and made Captain America work by having The Rocketeer director Joe Johnston making another circa-WWII pulp superhero adventure, and Kenneth Branagh’s Thor was a fun fantasy romance and gave us a great villain into the mix, so the big three were set up, but there were still doubts, especially as Iron Man 2 and The Incredible Hulk hadn’t been as well received.

And we had an unknown to me new actor as the Hulk. Mark Ruffalo turned out to be great, him being pretty big normally is an interesting change too. And there’s a great chilling moment where, in a reverse of the TV series classic bit where Banner’s eyes go constricted and bright green as he starts to change, we see his eyes are still human as the change takes over. And then we get Hulk versus Black Widow and Natasha makes it pretty even.

Okay, I had a reasonable amount of confidence in Joss Whedon back then as a Buffy fan so I got to be a hipster about it, which was nice.

I love it. I just watched it again and I know a big chunk of it by heart. Give me an anniversary screening and I’ll be there.

The Defenders

The former Netflix Marvel shows are now on Disney+ here, along with Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. in the US though it has been here for quite a while. Daredevil and Jessica Jones get banners on the front page.

It always makes me curious about the unmade 2010s Buffy film reboot as its writer Whit Anderson wrote for and was story editor on Daredevil S2 with showrunner and Buffy series writing veteran Doug Petrie.
