Character Creation Challenge 2025 9: Aeon

Character Creation Challenge 2025

9: Aeon

The original Trinity game, set a century in the future where artificially-activated psionic power is widespread and humanity beings to move to other worlds, with different planets, Earth nations and Psion Orders allowing different SF subgenres in one setting.

While the focus is more on missions and mysteries, there are still details of popular culture, music trends and shows and fashion and the like.

Van-sized private spaceships aren’t really a thing if you want to go further than the moon, but there are ways to travel without them and ways to get on the bigger ships starting to make interstellar voyages after a few years of isolation. So this is a time when a world tour might include more than one world.

Wild Ride

Concept
Young up-and-comers in the synth and percussion heavy Casablanca Bang scene in Tanger, touring extrasolar colonies as part of a cultural exchange program. Travelling light, with just mics, a guitar, force feedback drum pads and air-touch synth: if they need something bigger and louder they find it on site.

Mass Effect Prime

Prime planning Mass Effect series. As they routinely throw money at things like The Rings Of Power and Citadel I can imagine them actually going through with it.

Happy N7 Day!

Star Trek ideas

For about my 250th Star Trek tag:

In almost forty years GMing I have never actually run a Star Trek game.

And the idea goes back a while.

Reminded of this by the current game, see overthinking re toys and ship designs

The closest I’ve come was a guest GM shot at a not-quite-Trek game, and the closest I came to offering was in 2009 using Cinematic Unisystem when I got that game’s GM as the only interested player.

I’ve done a fair bit of Doctor Who, going back to when FASA did both licences, so I’ve done my share of planet-of-the-week games although they lack the Starfleet hierarchy. (Not that a Trek game needs that, but it does usually assume that.) The Time Lord then was the first and still regular Trek GM I know, a significantly bigger fan and the person most likely to be interested but also to have strong opinions about it.

Indeed that one not-Trek adventure was as I’ve mentioned before a MegaTraveller adventure that I’d previously run in C7’s Doctor Who with that game’s GM as a Time Lord.

Amusing side note, I never successfully completed the fourth Fighting Fantasy gamebook, Starship Traveller, a Trek-alike which briefly risked a lawsuit with Traveller for using the UK spelling.

So my history of not quite doing Star Trek gaming predates my first Star Trek game.

I’ve made notes since those early games - Klingons? TOS with better effects? The Enterprise after next? - but never gone for it.

I’ve done a lot more Star Wars, since WEG first edition, because that’s much more my idiom. And naturally some Trinity.

I’m considering it now with the my-style-friendly Star Trek Adventures system after playing in a couple of games, and the more loosey-goosey feel of the Kelvin timeline and Strange New Worlds. If nothing else it would give me more authority to grumble about some of the published adventures.

Of course the ship would need a new model and a cool-sounding name. I’ve used Horizon before...

Trinity Continuum: Aegis

Trinity Continnum: Aegis on Backerkit. The new eras for the Trinity Continuum so far have been within a lifetime of the existing games. Aegis is a couple thousand years earlier than that.

Starfield

Starfield, with gameplay footage a year on from the earlier reveal, joins the likes of Destiny as big computer games I want to do as a tabletop game. Possibly with Trinity Continuum: Aeon. Definitely stealing the vintage explorers’ clubhouse in a shiny space city.

Trinity Continuum Player's Guide

Trinity Continuum Player’s Guide is now on Backerkit. The backer options are named after Allegiances which were given shorter writeups in the rulebook, and three of them including the physical copy tier are named after ones I created.

Trinity at 25

Ian A. A. Watson notes:

Æon, and the overall setting we now call the Trinity Continuum, was released in hardcover format 25 years ago today.

It's been an honour to do my part to shepherd its latest edition.

Here's to 25 more.

Starfield

Starfield, the new space opera video game from the company behind Skyrim and Fallout, gets a longish preview ahead of its 2023 release.

The ships and bases mostly look sort of grottily industrial in an Alien or Firefly way with some shinier Alliance areas, with lots of shooting at alien creatures and pirates on the ground and space dogfights, while sounding more optimistic and Star Trek with hopeful music and a cooperative group looking at a plot involving Mysterious Alien Artefacts.

The standout visual moment for me was the Constellation group HQ being a library with wood paneling, comfy armchairs and portraits on the walls, a charming retro aesthetic for an explorers’ society compared to the shiny Starfleet areas elsewhere in the city. This says something about me as well as them, as someone who likes the Library at Teviot.

I’m very tempted to steal that for the Aeon Trinity.

When Gravity Fails

A call for a When Gravity Fails TV series from Sam Reader at Tor.

The novel, a cyberpunk noir set somewhere in the Middle East where learning and personality chips are commonplace alongside body modification including gender affirmation, is perhaps more familiar to gamers than average, having been the subject of a Cyberpunk 2020 sourcebook as well as a PC adventure game. Writer George Alec Effinger also wrote the opening fiction for Trinity first edition.

Might have to use one of the other titles in the series as it now sounds a bit like a cartoon.
