RPGaDAY 2026 18. Directness

#RPGaDAY 2026

18. Directness

18. A fast introduction of a new PC or player?

If I know players are likely to come and go I’ll try to have onboarding options and avoid cliffhangers. Emphasis on try.

Some games and settings are better for this than others, mechanically and narratively.

Overlooking the old “why do we trust this total stranger walking up to us in the middle of a secret mission?” and the magic power of the PC Glow...

D&D style fantasy calls it “West Marches” when every session begins and ends with the PCs in their base and venturing out from it. That cuts off things like multi-session dungeons and heavier ongoing plots unless you use the old un-narrative kludge of teleporting PCs in, but it’s a good idea for an open table.

Star Trek (a setting where characters can just teleport in and out mid adventure) would do this if it were realistic about its Luxury Space Communism and faster-than-light travel. Ha ha. Star Trek Adventures makes you pay player resources to get specialist NPC crew to go on camera, which is the model-the-show way of dealing with this. Star Fleet Battles RPG Prime Directive goes the other way and has a completely different command structure for its variant universe.

Mission: Impossible on TV started with selecting agents with relevant skillsets. I’ve seen someone suggest pregens in dossiers before.

(Note that the films acquire a consistent team as they go along, leading to narrative issues like needing something for both the computer geniuses to do.)

Last academic year I had a large amount of player turnover in Vampire: The Masquerade and that isn’t ideal for it or how I run it. Even then, if I’d known I could have tailored the chronicle setup to PCs being part of a group that could explain PCs coming and going and make sessions less serialised. Not ideal for personal horror or slow unravelling of mysteries but I could give it a go. Hmm.

My most setting-of-the-week one-and-done game is Doctor Who, which also has fast character creation... but following the series model really expects the PCs to be the one point of consistency.

If I want to go full “jump in any session” open table, I might go with a light superhero game like ICONS with a big team. Fast character creation, largely self-contained adventures. I’m sure threads would reappear at some point, but I can juggle and improvise so we don’t end up with too many “this should be a Penguin adventure but Batman’s player isn’t here” situations.

A large kitchen sink also helps if I want to come up with a largely standalone adventure every week.

Hey, Buffy is a light superhero game too! Albeit one that also expects a consistent Scooby Gang.

Buffy The Vampire Slayer with ICONS Assembled Edition

I was always going to start here.

I’ve run Buffy for years, and used Cinematic Unisystem for a few other settings too.

A superhero game for a plain-clothes superhero kinda setting.

Arthur Adams cover for issue 1 of Dark Horse Comics Buffy

ICONS is a pretty light 2D6-based superhero RPG influenced by the original Marvel Super Heroes. Using the second Assembled Edition as the first edition PDF isn’t available separately.

It defaults to random character generation, though it has a points-based option. 45 points each, 1 point per for Attributes, Powers and Specialties, Extras 1 per point of the base power, Limits countering that cost.

1a: Buffy The Vampire Slayer

Buffy Summers, high school sophomore and, as of a few months ago, Vampire Slayer.

RPGaDAY 2025 10 - Origin

#RPGaDAY2025

10 - Origin

Where do the PCs come from? Some genres and styles of game put more weight on this than others.

Superhero media starts with the origin story so regularly that not doing so gets a film headlines. The importance of origin here makes sense because the characters are generally unusual in some way. And in gaming it fits because starting superhero PCs are built to last, and can be so varied that specialising really helps.

The breakthrough superhero RPG Champions was an early point-buy system unlike the earlier Villains & Vigilantes, and that became more common than random generation in and out of supers. Both have their advantages - points are good for creating what you want and an attempt at balance but encourage tinkering with builds, random can prevent minmaxing and reflects some of the odd power mixes out there but can go too far with that or leave you with something you’d rather not play.

Nowadays games like ICONS have both with chances to switch from randomness if something sparks an idea.

Random tables can also be more helpful as a starting point for villains.

The first supers game I ran, Golden Heroes features random generation with options for nudging like switching powers and advice for negotiated modelling, an early lesson for me in different ways players and GMs can work together on a premise.

And there are other approaches like Powered By The Apocalypse playbooks, used in supers in Masks: A New Generation where the powers are a small check box as part of defining your role in the world and team. They get you into the game very quickly, but mostly work for that particular playstyle, a step up from pregens.

Where, Grateful, Art

The PCs are among the crowd at the unveiling of a statue to a fallen hero. Then an old enemy attacks! Can they become the heroes the city needs today?

Character Creation Challenge 2025 10: Superheroes

Character Creation Challenge 2025

10: Superheroes

Superheroes overall, especially four-colour and lighter MCU styles.

Larger-than-life figures with mighty clashes, often with striking visual styles and presence...

It’s more of a side gig in general superhero universes than something like Aberrant but can still be the focus of a series.

Marvel and DC both have superhero singers with sound-related powers fronting bands, and for the most recent music-focused Black Canary series the creators actually released a couple of EPs.

Black Canary on tour, by Annie Wu

Real bands sometimes get powered up in comics, often relating to their stage personas and gimmicks.

And Gerard Way created an askew superhero universe between My Chemical Romance tours.

An early GURPS Supers adventure Deathwish is about a band who are secretly supervillains, though not in a Satanic Panic way despite the name, though their fan club is basically a militia to add some mook fights. (The suggestion of the PCs taking time out to attack a crack den while following the band to Los Angeles didn’t age well.)

Were I to do this I’d probably use ICONS. And Rose Bailey adapted ICONS for Scott Pilgrim style comic supers youth and music scene action with FRETS, in case you really want to blow the roof off the venue.

Character Creation Challenge 2024 21e: ICONS 5

Character Creation Challenge 2024

I’m running a three to four player game at the moment so am mostly thinking of small groups, but to make five for this one how about a villain?

Going with the Batman model I could do a a powered villain for this effectively unpowered team, maybe a probability manipulator (who may or may not be a demon) to really lean into the gambling motif, but went for a mobster with a gimmick, and with the Joker being otherwise occupied...

The King Of Clubs
Frank Cesar

Enforcer for the Romero gang

Frank came up from nothing to make his way to the right hand of Old Man Romero’s gang, making sure nothing goes wrong in the Firework casino complex or with the other families. He likes sharp suits, fast cars, women who don’t expect serious attachments and the odd good fight now and then. A crack shot with a gun, but he prefers a club or a silent thrown strike.

And having created a group called the Aces, another kind of ace.

Blue Jay
Harry Langdon

Ace pilot and paraglider

A former stunt pilot recruited by One-Eyed Jack as a rapid insertion pilot, he’s keen on testing a new parachute glider. (Paragliding really started in 1966, though it had been tried before.)

Having created a public city team for the 2022 challenge, this time a city’s big private team...

The Aces

A team dedicated to fighting organised crime in 1960s Las Vegas. (The series version of organised crime may be more Batman: The Animated Series than Crime Story.)

Team leader and mastermind

Having lost a friend when one gang targeted another in a drive-by shooting and didn’t stop shooting, a former rich kid dedicated his life to stopping this happening to anyone else.

Adventure Calendar 2023 3: Pendragon

Adventure Calendar 2023
3: King Arthur Pendragon

I’ve done this one already because one of the biggest Arthurian stories kicks off at the Christmas court.

But Arthurian trappings can show up in other games in other times and places. I had someone taking a bullet for the sleeping Arthur in Hollow Earth Expedition and borrowed the Knights Of Pendragon idea to play a returned Sir Gawain in ICONS. See also Tim Powers planning a series about Arthur returning in various times of crisis.

In Time Of Greatest Need

A great threat to the nation, and a band of heroes rise from their slumber. And they have to deal with the festive shopping in order to prevent an apocalypse on Christmas morning.

Two characters in search of a series

An RPGnet ICONS PBP idea thread appeared and disappeared overnight, meaning the two ideas I didn’t have time to post have nowhere to go, which is a bummer. The idea was a 1980s TV supers game with budget-friendly powers. The characters were a bulletproof former soldier as a frontline fighter and a Molly Ringwald lookalike telepath if an investigation and support character would work instead.
