By becoming a monster, one learns what it is to be human.
Vampire: The Masquerade
What are you going to do to make it through tonight? What about tomorrow night? And after the deeds are done and your belly’s full, how are you going to live with yourself? What are you going to do with your damnation that makes it worth all the sins along the way?
Blood And Smoke: The Strix Chronicles
There are plenty of other RPGs on the market about characters who are powerful, dangerous, and cool. Vampire can and will do all those things, but it should also give some of the spotlight to the Hunger and the risks of losing it all.
It should contrast vampires with humans, as well as other vampires who are less humane and/or more jaded than they are. It should deal with hunting and feeding as more than a roll of the dice, and give some thought to what it means and some perspective on where that blood comes from.
Of course it’s easy to focus on the Kindred and other supernaturals, but if the PCs and all NPCs with a speaking part are vampires, then does it matter? Vampires should, at least on some level, be outsiders, not the norm.
So that’s alienation, degeneration, violence and, yes, personal horror. Sound fun?
And then if they find someone they can trust and share this with, it’s all the more precious.
And now, a different interpretation of “favourite theme”, which still fits my themes...
