Adventure Calendar 2024 17: M*n*p*ly

Adventure Calendar 2024
17: M*n*p*ly

And for the third set of eight days, board games you might play with not-so-gamer family and friends.

After this one.

M*n*p*ly: A ripoff of The Landlord’s Game that removes the anti-monopolist version and the clear endgame.

The Landlord's Game, 1906

DO NOT PLAY M*N*P*LY. Even if it wasn’t theft it’s a bad copy and the result is a bad game. If you must, read the rules rather than play as generally misremembered. Or play one of the non-standard variants that has an endgame. This will lessen the chances of falling out over a game and discouraging people playing tabletop games at all.

Anyway.

A land race and fight over influence isn’t very festive either, and landlords are on the Scrooge side, so spin this in a different direction...

The PCs somehow end up in charge of running, opening or restoring a business like a hotel.

There are of course games for this.

An inn would be the classic choice for ye olde fantasy RPG. Tiny Taverns does that, for one.

(I actually did something similar for Vampire in the Last Dance chronicle hook series, but it’s largely Vampire-specific. This is kind of ironic because fighting over control of limited resources like business influence is a classic setup for Vampire LARPs.)

(Add fighting monsters and we get something like my pizza delivery Buffy game Graveyard Shift, or Jiangshi: Blood In The Banquet Hall.)

Possibly a ski resort, to reconnect with the ideas about outdoor winter activities.

PCs are probably better suited to a scrappy underdog business rather than a luxury brand or a global franchise. Add a grasping competitor and various random-ish ups and downs in the style of Chance cards.

Maybe go full Damn The Man, Save The Music! for maximum anti-monopolist irony.

Alternatively, the PCs are a top hat, a dog, a car...
