The Cycle (2026)
The Cycle came out yesterday on Shudder, looks to be its most positively received release for spooky month.
Deborah Ann Woll plays a forensic scientist whose father disappeared over thirty years ago and gets a call when he turns up dead. A very strange kind of dead.
For the first half hour this plays like a straight gruesome psychological horror, and then we get to the twist, and then half an hour later we get it in full.
And it... sort of works. But...
The monster is too fun.
The bleakly grounded style and painful personal stakes absolutely clash with the fun practical-effects monster running around. A much more low-key makeup-effects version might have worked for me, a small juxtaposition of style and substance, but here it’s two great tastes that absolutely do not go together.
Also there’s a bit with an optical scanner that reminded me of The Mummy (2017) but I acknowledge that’s a me problem.
The medium: Shudder
Gameability: A grounded grim investigation of something this weird, Delta Green lives in that space.
