This Is Not A Test (2026)
They still make regular zombie movies!
Starting with a content warning for suicidal thought and then much in the vein of the 2005 Dawn Of The Dead seeing the zombie apocalypse kick off, with running zombies and metal music invokes some tonal whiplash but music choice aside (which returns for the amusingly off end credits) the first scene is the main tonal setup.
This zombie survivor movie which mostly takes place in a high school, invoking The Breakfast Club in numbers rather than tone, is occasionally brutal but mostly just sad.
There’s a nice chilling scene where Sloane (Olivia Holt, repeatedly getting blood on her face again even more than in Heart Eyes) can’t sleep for the sound of the apocalypse outside and tries to find somewhere quieter, but also at one point to get a ten minute “what happened to X” effect we get a flashback in a flashback. Apart from that it’s well made barring some excessive shakycam, well acted, if you’re okay with a downer.
The medium: Shudder
Gameability: Zombies and survivors of course, but tonally more Quietus melabcholic horror.
