Character Creation Challenge 2024
Angel is the RPG of the TV series, a spinoff from Buffy The Vampire Slayer getting a spinoff game. It’s an action-heavy urban fantasy setting with monsters to fight and apocalypses to avert, but often in a funny way. As the title character is an initially unique thing in the setting, a vampire with a soul, it suggests building similarly unusual characters.
Like its parent game, Angel divides PCs into types based on overall competence balanced by access to narrative-bending Drama Points. Here the main types Champions and Investigators are both a bit more skilled than their Buffy equivalents, so the extra-powerful Veteran option doesn’t outclass the others as much, but i still went with the basic two.
I could go full
Angel knockoff and bring in the
Vampire With A Soul that I made for 2023, or ironic and use the actual
angel I also made. But to be a bit different, swiping from an earlier series about a brooding immortal in a nice coat, expanding on another of my 2023 ideas for a hero
out of time, and stealing an idea from King Arthur - especially the Tim Powers version where he returned in multiple times of greatest need - and the
Golden Heroes adventure The Pilcomayo Project where Paul Revere did the same thing:
Stone
Type: Champion (Cursed Immortal Warrior)

Description: A beautiful voice full of weariness
Example quote: “You never know how long you have. Trust me on that.”
Stone was once just a man, a warrior who fought against the ancient Persian empire, but a priest blessed him such that he would live and fight so long as his people needed him - but worded it such that he would die when the war was definitively won by either side, never to see the peace that followed. So it became a blessing and a curse, paying the price of the good he brought to the world with his loss.
And then decades later he rose from his grave when his homeland was invaded again. And once more, he died of wounds he had ignored until the final blow.
And the next time he awoke, he knew not where he was. His return did not seem entirely tied to where his body fell or was laid to rest.
Now, having died in the sack of Rome, protecting innocents in Jerusalem, seeing the start and end of the Hundred Years War and dying in the War of Independence, the American Civil War, the Great War and the Second World War, he’s back.
And this makes people who know about him nervous. Because which war is he due to fight?
Having returned to fight apocalyptic supernatural battles a few times as well, he figures it must be one of those. And maybe, just maybe, the last one he has to fight.
