#RPGaDAY2020 1: BEGINNING

#RPGaDAY2020

1: BEGINNING

I’ve talked about my beginning RPG and beginning RPG experiences before, so...

Beginning a session.

This can be tricky. Stage fright and the blank page are real issues even after mumble-ty-something years.

While I improvise quite a lot though it varies from game to game, it does help to have a little bit prepped, at least a rough idea of what the TV guide blurb for the episode might be.

Having all the players gathered and being able to say something to mark the start of the session which can be as simple as “So...” can help. One of the great blessings of The Watch House was having a player who could do that for me! (Who once couldn’t make it to a specific session but texted “Soooo...” forty minutes into it! It worked.)

Beginning a series.

This goes double for the first session of a new game. Players who may or may not know the system, the setting, the GM and each other. Nearly enough rulebooks. A need to set tone, and possibly an opening pitch. For instance, one of my current games has ended up with more entirely new players than experienced ones, so has shifted from politics kicked off by a setting event to mystery around it.
